Iran Urges UN to Condemn Trump Threats Amid Protests

03rd Jan. 2026

Iran’s UN ambassador has formally urged the UN secretary-general and the president of the Security Council to condemn what Tehran calls “unlawful threats” from US President Donald Trump. This appeal came as a nationwide protests over economic hardship continue to grip the country.

In a letter sent on Friday, Ambassador Amir Saeed Iravani asked UN chief António Guterres and members of the Security Council to “unequivocally and firmly condemn” Trump’s “reckless and provocative statements”. The appeal came just hours after Trump said that the United States is “locked and loaded and ready to go” if further protesters are killed during the demonstrations in Iran.

The image shows a blurred crowd scene with a news headline reading Iran urges the UN to condemn Trump threats amid nationwide protests.

Iravani warned that such remarks constituted a “serious violation” of the UN Charter and international law. “Any attempt to incite, encourage or legitimize internal unrest as a pretext for external pressure or military intervention is a gross violation of the sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said in the letter. He added that Iran “reiterates its inherent right to defend its sovereignty” and would respond “decisively and proportionately”. “We hold US “fully responsible” for any escalation,” he concluded.

Iran’s Protest Spreads Nationwide Amid Rise in Economic Pressure

Meanwhile, protests continued across several Iranian cities, including Qom, Mashhad, Yasuj, Hamedan, and parts of Tehran, according to the State News Agency. The unrest began after shopkeepers in the capital launched a strike over soaring prices and prolonged economic stagnation. Since then, the protests have widened into broader demonstrations.

Authorities said that at least nine people have been killed and 44 are arrested so far. In Qom province, officials have reported that another person died after a grenade exploded in his hand, on which the deputy governor described as an attempt to incite further unrest. However, Iranian leaders have adopted a more conciliatory tone than in previous protest waves. President Masoud Pezeshkian acknowledged that the government was “at fault” and promised to take corrective measures. According to the observers, current response is very different from the brutal response to previous uprisings in the nation.

Tension escalating between the United States and Iran

The diplomatic exchange also unfolds against heightened regional tensions. On Truth Social, Trump said that if Iran “violently kills peaceful protesters, which is their custom, the United States of America will come to their rescue”. In response, Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, warned that US interference would bring “chaos across the entire region and the destruction of American interests”. Relations remain strained after the US bombed three Iranian nuclear sites in June during a 12-day escalation that involved Israel.

Last week, alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump warned that Washington would “knock the hell out” of Iran if it advanced its nuclear or ballistic weapons programme. Pezeshkian has since pledged a “severe” response to any new aggression. As protests persist and diplomatic rhetoric sharpens, the parallel crises at home and abroad are placing Iran under growing pressure. Whether international engagement tempers tensions or further hardens positions may shape the country’s next political and economic chapter.
