George Russell Wins Thrilling Chinese GP Sprint Race

The Chinese Grand Prix sprint race has delivered intense action from the start. And now, George Russell has secured a victory for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team after a dramatic early battle with Lewis Hamilton. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc finished second and ensure a strong result for Scuderia Ferrari alongside Hamilton which finished in third.

Russell vs Hamilton Battle Dominates Early Laps

Right from the start of the sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix, Russell and Hamilton were delivering a thrilling contest. In fact, the pair also exchanged the race lead five times within the opening five laps. Initially, Hamilton has surged forward from fourth on the grid and passed Lando Norris into Turn One. Shortly afterward, he made an aggressive move at Turn Nine to take the lead.

However, Russell responded quickly. He reclaimed the top spot on the straight leading to Turn 14. Soon after, Hamilton fought back again and passed Russell around the outside of Turn One. Nevertheless, Russell regained control on lap five and gradually built a comfortable gap.

Meanwhile, Ferrari teammates Charles Leclerc and Hamilton began battling for position. After several intense laps, Leclerc finally overtook Hamilton at Turn One on lap eight. Although Hamilton attempted to reclaim the place immediately, but Leclerc defended strongly and secured a second place.

Later in the race, the competition got tightened when Nico Hülkenberg stopped at Turn One due to a technical problem and went to brought out the safety car. As a result, the field closed up and several drivers headed to the pits for fresh soft tyres. During this phase, Kimi Antonelli received a 10-second penalty after colliding with Isack Hadjar on the opening lap. Although Antonelli initially climbed back to fifth place, but he dropped positions after serving the penalty.

Additionally, Oscar Piastri briefly overtook Antonelli after the restart. However, his team later asked him to return the position because the move occurred before the official start line. Eventually, Piastri had reclaimed fifth place when Antonelli made a mistake at the final corner.

Further back, Liam Lawson benefited from strategy by staying out during the safety car period that allowed him to climb from ninth to seventh. Meanwhile, Oliver Bearman finished tenth to take the final point. In contrast, Max Verstappen endured a difficult race. After dropping to 15th following a poor start, the Red Bull Racing driver fought back to ninth but narrowly missed the points.

Ultimately, Russell controlled the race after the early drama and secured a confident sprint victory, which strengthed Mercedes’ momentum in the 2026 Formula One season.
