Modi rides on new wave of popularity, as his party BJP mark Historic Election Win

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured major gains in state assembly elections whose results began emerging on Monday, marking a notable resurgence in eastern and northeastern India and reinforcing the party’s momentum ahead of the 2029 general election.

In the most closely watched contest, the BJP appeared poised to form the government in West Bengal for the first time, leading in roughly 180 seats out of 294 in early trends, surpassing the 148-seat majority mark and dealing a significant blow to longtime Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC), which trailed with leads in about 85 constituencies.

The outcome, would represent a historic shift in a state long dominated by regional forces first the Left and then the TMC since 2011. Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, contesting against Banerjee in Bhabanipur, projected confidence in forming the government. The high-stakes battle in West Bengal followed a campaign overshadowed by disputes over electoral roll revisions that removed millions of names, drawing allegations of disenfranchisement from opposition parties.

In Assam, the BJP-led alliance was on track for a strong victory, leading in around 88-98 seats in the 126-member assembly well above the 64 needed for a majority securing what would be a third consecutive term for Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The BJP-led NDA also held a lead in the union territory of Puducherry. However, results in southern states showed limited breakthroughs: in Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician Vijay’s newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) surged ahead with leads in over 100 seats, disrupting the traditional DMK-AIADMK duopoly, while in Kerala, the Congress-led UDF was positioned to defeat the incumbent Left Democratic Front.

A Gauge of National Mood and Love for Modi

Analysts view these polls held in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry as an important barometer of Modi’s and the BJP’s standing midway through the government’s third term. The party has focused on organizational expansion in regions where it has traditionally been weak, emphasizing development, Hindutva themes, and targeted welfare outreach.

Turnout was notably high in West Bengal at over 92%, the highest in the state’s history, signaling intense voter engagement amid polarized campaigning.

Modi and senior BJP leaders had expressed confidence in a strong performance, framing the elections as a test of “pro-incumbency” at the national level. The results are expected to bolster the party’s position in national politics, even as it navigates coalition dynamics at the center following the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, where the BJP fell short of a solo majority. These election victories has reinforced the popularity ratings of PM Modi in India. He appears to be smoothly sailing towards his 4th term as Prime Minister of India.
