Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said Telegram did not promptly remove videos linked to the Christchurch and Buffalo mass shootings, while Islamic State beheading videos allegedly remained available for months. The case follows a year-long investigation during which Australian users reported 12 alleged pro-terror posts between July and October 2025. According to court filings, Telegram failed to remove 10 of those posts or suspend the related accounts. If the court rules against the company, it could face penalties of up to A$54.6 million (about US$38 million).
Telegram has rejected the claims and confirmed it will defend the case in court. The company also said it removed more than 153,000 terrorist-related communities during 2026 as part of its moderation efforts. The case adds to a series of investigations that could reshape how governments regulate encrypted messaging platforms and enforce online safety laws worldwide.
