Trump and Xi to Meet for High-Stakes Bilateral Summit in US
Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in Washington for a state visit that runs from September 23 to 25, 2026. China’s foreign ministry confirmed the trip in a statement on Monday, September 21 at the invitation of US President Donald Trump, marking Xi’s first visit to the White House in eleven years.
The summit also marks Xi’s second face-to-face meeting with Trump this year, following Trump’s state visit to Beijing in May 2026. Both leaders now face pressure to stabilize a relationship strained by trade disputes, technology rivalry and regional security concerns.
Trade, Tariffs and Rare Earths Dominate the Discussion
The Trump-Xi summit comes as a one-year trade truce, struck at the Busan summit in October 2025, nears its expiration date. That truce paused new tariffs and kept some Chinese rare-earth exports flowing to the US. Both sides reportedly want an extension, however they disagree on how long that extension should last.
US officials have also floated tariff reductions for a narrow set of non-strategic goods, according to Reuters. In addition, talks may cover the creation of a Board of Trade and a Board of Investment, though officials caution these ideas need further work before implementation.
AI, Taiwan and Iran Also Weigh on the Agenda
Artificial intelligence has emerged as a central theme of this year’s talks. Several American technology executives are expected to attend a state dinner at the White House on September 24. China’s rapid progress in AI models and reusable rockets has also shifted the balance of the relationship since 2017.
Taiwan, Iran and nuclear issues remain thornier topics for both delegations. In a confident People’s Daily editorial, China’s ambassador Xie Feng called Taiwan and human rights “red lines” that cannot be crossed, alongside China’s sovereignty, political system and right to development. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has already met Iran’s foreign minister in Beijing ahead of the summit. Analysts expect no major breakthroughs, however they also do not anticipate any breakdown in ties.
