Taiwan Receives First New F-16V Fighter Jets as China Threat Grows

Taiwan received its first two new F-16V Block 70 fighter jets on October 2, beginning deliveries from a 66-aircraft order placed with the United States in 2019. The two jets flew through Hawaii and Guam before arriving at Chihhang Air Base in Taitung, eastern Taiwan. Their arrival comes as Chinese military activity around Taiwan has remained a major security concern, putting continued pressure on the island’s air force.

Beijing considers Taiwan part of China, while Taiwan has its own government, military and political system. Against this backdrop, the F-16V delivery marks an important step in Taiwan’s effort to modernise its air-defense capabilities. The new fighters will also strengthen its ability to monitor and respond to growing military pressure around the island. For Taiwan, the arrival of the first two jets adds a new layer to its defense as tensions across the Taiwan Strait continue.

F-16V Delivery Strengthens Taiwan’s Air Defense After Years of Delays

Taiwan had waited years for its new F-16V fighter jets. In 2019, then-Defense Minister Yen De-fa said the first two would arrive in 2023, followed by batches of four or five jets through 2026.However, production and software issues delayed the programme. Taiwan had planned to spend NT$247.2 billion, or about $8 billion, on it from 2020 to 2026. The delivery is also significant because Taiwan has received new fighter jets for the first time in about 29 years, since its Mirage 2000s arrived in 1997.

The F-16V features advanced avionics, radar and weapons systems. These upgrades can improve Taiwan’s ability to detect, track and respond to air threats, including modern Chinese aircraft such as the J-20 stealth fighter. Yen said in 2019 that the F-16V could share sensor data and serve for at least 30 years. He also described its capabilities as comparable to the J-20, although that was an official claim rather than an independent assessment. In addition, Taiwan completed upgrades to its existing F-16 fleet in 2023, giving its air force another layer of modern defensive capability.

F-16V Deal and the US-Taiwan-China Geopolitical Tension

Taiwan’s F-16V Block 70 programme is part of a wider dispute between China and Taiwan and a growing security relationship between Taipei and Washington. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and seeks eventual unification. The United States does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but it maintains important economic and security ties with the island. As a result, the F-16V deal has become part of a broader strategic issue in the Indo-Pacific.

The new F-16Vs can strengthen the island’s ability to monitor and respond to air threats as Chinese military activity continues around Taiwan. Beijing has repeatedly opposed US arms sales to Taipei and has urged Washington to stop supplying weapons. For the United States, support for Taiwan’s defensive capabilities remains part of its regional security approach. The F-16V programme therefore highlights the wider tension between China’s territorial claims, Taiwan’s defense needs and the US role in the region, while potentially strengthening Taiwan’s ability to deter military action.
