Nasry Asfura wins Honduras Presidential Election After Tense Count
25th Dec. 2025
Nasry Asfura has won Honduras’s 2025 presidential election, controversially defeating Salvador Nasralla and Rixi Moncada. He secured a narrow victory for the right-of-centre National Party of Honduras (PNH) after days of uncertainty, technical failures, and sharp political disputes. This tightly fought contest has reshaped the country’s political direction and may also influence wider dynamics across Central America.

According to final results released by the electoral authorities, Asfura received 40.3% of the vote while Liberal Party candidate Salvador Nasralla secured 39.5% votes. Meanwhile, Rixi Moncada, the candidate of the governing leftist LIBRE party, finished a distant third. However, the razor-thin margin and lengthy vote-counting process have fueled allegations of irregularities and increased political tensions.
Prolonged Counting and dispute in the approval of the election’s result
The official outcome followed days of disruption, as Honduras’s electronic ballot system repeatedly failed. As a result, election officials were forced to count around 15% of tally sheets by hand, covering hundreds of thousands of votes. Although two electoral council members and one deputy approved the final figures. However, one council member, Marlon Ocha, was absent from the announcement video confirming the winner.
Despite the controversy, Asfura moved quickly to claim victory. “Honduras: I am ready to govern. I will not let you down,” he wrote on X after the results were declared. Nevertheless, opposition figures immediately rejected the decision. Congressional leader Luis Redondo, from the LIBRE party, condemned the declaration as an “electoral coup”. He further added, “This is completely outside the law. It has no value.”
Reaction from US and Fraud Claims from Oppositions
International responses followed swiftly. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated Asfura, saying US “looks forward to working with his administration to advance prosperity and security in our hemisphere.” Earlier, President Donald Trump, who publicly endorsed Asfura during the campaign, warned on Truth Social: “Looks like Honduras is trying to change the results of their Presidential Election… If they do, there will be hell to pay!”
Meanwhile, Nasralla called for an investigation, alleging manipulation during a system blackout. “The screen went dark and an algorithm… changed the data,” he wrote on social media. Asfura was a former mayor of Tegucigalpa known for his focus on infrastructure and public order. Now, he will face the challenge of governing a deeply divided country. Although his victory ends a polarizing campaign, the disputes over legitimacy are likely to persist in the weeks ahead.
