Putin Announces Series of Agreements With Modi Despite US Trade Strains

05th Dec. 2025

At the 23rd annual summit (4-5 December 2025) between Russia and India, Vladimir Putin declared that “many agreements” had been signed with PM Narendra Modi. It leads to deepening the ties between Russia and India, even as the United States keeps pressurizing India over its dealings with Russia.

During the summit held in New Delhi, the two parties witnessed the signing of an extensive economic cooperation agreements running through 2030. The accord encompasses a broad array of sectors. It includes fertilizers (proposed urea-plant deal) to food safety, shipping, and consumer protection. Both leaders said that the deal was an important step toward making bilateral trade more diverse and fixing long-standing trade imbalances.

Tactical Cooperation Expands Despite US Pressure

For decades, India and Russia have maintained a strategic partnership. Yet this year’s summit takes place under extraordinary global pressure. The United States has imposed steep tariffs on Indian goods with penalties on New Delhi for continuing imports of discounted Russian oil. Despite such pressure, Putin lauded Modi’s leadership in the meeting. He called Modi a “balanced, wise” statesman. Meanwhile, he also applauded India for standing firm against what he described as coercion.

Moscow, for its part, pledged to re-balance trade by increasing imports of Indian agricultural products and medicines. He takes this move with the intention of addressing India’s persistent trade deficit with Russia. In remarks following the summit, Putin stressed that India-Russia cooperation “is not aimed at harming others”. Further, he asserted that the strengthened partnership should be seen as “protecting the mutual interests” of both countries rather than targeting third parties.

The agreements signed between the countries reflect Russia’s desire to deepen ties with India, spanning energy, defense, trade, and economic cooperation. Meanwhile, India continues to balance its historical relationship with Russia against its growing engagement with the West. As India and Russia commit to increasing bilateral trade and collaboration, their decisions will likely shape geopolitical alignments in the years ahead.
