250 Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals are Missing After Migrant Boat Sinks in Indian Ocean

Around 250 people were missing after a boat carrying Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals capsized in the Indian Ocean, according to the United Nations refugee and migration agencies. The overcrowded trawler had left Teknaf in southern Bangladesh and was bound for Malaysia. The agencies said it sank after heavy winds, rough seas, and overcrowding.

Rescue efforts found only nine survivors

A Bangladesh Coast Guard ship rescued nine people from the sea, including one woman, after spotting survivors drifting on drums and logs near the Andaman Islands. Reuters reported that the joint UN statement said around 250 people were missing, while the Guardian said preliminary information suggested about 280 people may have been aboard. The exact toll remained unclear, but both reports pointed to a major loss of life.

A perilous route for the Rohingya

The passengers were likely among the Rohingya, Myanmar’s persecuted Muslim minority, who often risk sea journeys in unsafe wooden boats to reach countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. The UN agencies said the tragedy showed the human cost of prolonged displacement and the lack of durable solutions for the Rohingya. They also urged more international funding for aid in Bangladesh and support for host communities there.

A desperate journey with few safe options

Survivors said traffickers had promised jobs in Malaysia, a route that has long drawn people fleeing violence in Myanmar and harsh conditions in Bangladesh’s refugee camps. The Guardian reported that one survivor said the vessel traveled for four days before it capsized, and that some passengers were kept in a holding area on the trawler. The wider crisis remains rooted in the 2017 military offensive in Myanmar, which forced hundreds of thousands of Rohingya into Bangladesh.
