Iranian drone strikes on CIA-linked facilities across the Gulf have triggered a new U.S. intelligence investigation into Russia’s possible role. They said one drone breached a vulnerable section of the embassy’s outer wall, allowing a second drone to enter through the opening before exploding inside the compound. Fortunately, the attack caused no reported deaths or injuries. Meanwhile, the inquiry expanded after Iran launched ballistic missile strikes on a U.S. airbase in Jordan, killing two American service members and raising fresh concerns about the sophistication of Tehran’s strike capabilities.

Investigators are also assessing the reported use of the Kometa-M satellite navigation system. According to defence experts, the Russian-developed system delivers greater targeting accuracy and stronger protection against electronic jamming than Iran’s existing guidance technology. Analysts are examining whether these capabilities contributed to the precision of the reported drone strikes.

Western Intelligence Raises New Questions Over Russia-Iran Military Ties

While technical experts continue to analyse the weapons involved, Western intelligence agencies have widened their focus to the broader strategic relationship between Moscow and Tehran. One Western intelligence agency concluded that Russia likely played a role in supporting intelligence-related targeting in the Gulf. According to intelligence sources, Russia is one of the few countries with both the technical capability and the strategic incentive to provide highly sensitive targeting information against U.S. interests. Daniel Hoffman, a former CIA station chief, said closer operational cooperation would not be surprising given the long-standing strategic partnership between Moscow and Tehran and their shared objective of reducing U.S. influence in key regions.

The classified assessment has intensified concerns that Russia-Iran cooperation may now extend beyond weapons transfers to operational intelligence support. Although no public evidence has conclusively established Russia’s direct involvement, the investigation is expected to shape future assessments of Russia-Iran military cooperation and its broader implications for Middle East security.
