Southern California Mayor Resigns in Chinese Agent Case

Eileen Wang, the mayor of Arcadia in Southern California, resigned on Monday and agreed to plead guilty to acting as an illegal agent for China. According to court documents, Wang worked with Chinese officials between late 2020 and 2022. She also helped promote pro-Beijing content through the Chinese-language platform U.S. News Center. Prosecutors said the website published articles supporting the Chinese government, including content linked to Xinjiang issues.

Wang, 58, was elected to the Arcadia City Council in November 2022, and the city later selected her as mayor through its rotating system. However, city officials said the conduct happened before she took office in December 2022. They also stated that no city staff or public funds were involved in the case. Federal investigators linked Wang to Yaoning “Mike” Sun and another associate connected to the same network. Sun already pleaded guilty and is serving a prison sentence, while another defendant, John Chen, also admitted guilt earlier.

Federal Investigation Reveals Pro-Beijing Propaganda Campaign

Federal prosecutors said Eileen Wang worked with Yaoning “Mike” Sun and other associates from late 2020 through 2022. They operated the U.S. News Center website and published content favorable to the Chinese government. According to court documents, Chinese officials and government-linked contacts sent articles directly to the group. Wang then posted the material online, often within a short time. In one case from June 2021, she shared a letter that rejected reports of abuses against Uyghurs in Xinjiang. Prosecutors also said Wang later responded to a government contact with the message, “Thank you leader,” according to the plea agreement.

Sun, who was Wang’s former fiance and campaign treasurer, already serves a four-year prison sentence after pleading guilty in the same investigation. Another associate, John Chen, also admitted guilt earlier and received a 20-month sentence.

Arcadia Mayor Forced to Step Down After Federal Investigation

Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang resigned on Monday after agreeing to plead guilty to acting as an illegal agent for China. She appeared in federal court in downtown Los Angeles on Monday afternoon. Prosecutors said Wang never informed the Justice Department about her role as a foreign agent, which violated federal law. However, her lawyers described the actions as personal mistakes linked to her past relationship with Sun. Federal prosecutors said the felony charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years. A formal plea hearing is expected in the coming weeks. The case quickly drew attention across Southern California and also raised fresh concerns about foreign influence in local politics.

Arcadia, located northeast of Los Angeles, has a population of nearly 53,000 residents and a large Chinese American community. Local leaders are now expected to choose a replacement for Wang on the five-member city council. The case has become one of the most closely watched political investigations in the region, and it also highlights growing federal scrutiny over alleged foreign influence efforts inside American communities.
