Black Clover Season 2: Your Catch-Up Guide for the Spade Kingdom Arc
BLACK CLOVER IS BACK Finalyyy!!! and Fans have been waiting. It’s expected to pick up with the Spade Kingdom Raid arc in the manga, where the Season 1 Anime previously left off. And those who can’t binge watch them all, Don’t worry we got you covered, we’ve done the hard part for you to get you ready for what’s next. The final stretch of the original anime gives viewers the essential info for events leading upto season 2 (i.e., Episodes 169, 170 and 171 are your entire catch-up course) The original anime aired 170 episodes from 2017 to 2021 and stopped in the middle of a major arc.
Overseas it was split into “Seasons 1-4,” but in Japan the anime aired consecutively and all 170 episodes are considered a single season. That’s why the continuation is titled Season 2. It premieres on October 3, 2026, with Ayataka Tanemura returning as director and Studio Pierrot handling animation, streaming on Crunchyroll in the Original Japanese audio with English subtitles (the English dub release date hasn’t been announced yet).
What Is Black Clover?
Black Clover is a shonen fantasy anime based on the Yuki Tabata’s Manga, set in a world where magic is part of everyday life and largely determines a person’s status and almost everyone is born with magic. Black clover revolves around the protagonist Asta, who is an exception in their world since he born without any magical power at all, yet he refuses to give up on his dream of becoming the Wizard King. What he has instead is stubborn determination, punishing training, and a rare five-leaf clover grimoire that grants him the power of anti-magic. He gets recruited by Captain Yami Sukehiro, Captain of Black Bulls, the misfit squad. He fights his way through the ranks of the Magic Knights, mostly as a member of Black Bulls Magic Knight squad.
His childhood rival and fellow orphan Yuno is his opposite, he’s tall and a prodigy with extraordinary magical talent, who rises quickly through the Golden Dawn. Yuno is also served by Sylph, the spirit of wind, who chooses him after he finds her scroll in a dungeon, and he is the human vessel for the reincarnated spirit of Licht and Tetia’s son. Their friendly rivalry drives the series, but the story expands well beyond the two of them. It brings in other Magic Knight squads, neighboring kingdoms like Heart and Spade, elves, and devils. The threats grow steadily more dangerous, and the future of the kingdoms becomes tied to the mysterious world of devils.
The World Is on a Countdown
In the last episodes of Season 1 we saw the beginning of The Spade Kingdom Raid Arc. The story you’re returning to is dark. The Dark Triad (Dante, Vanica and Zenon) of the Spade Kingdom is preparing the Advent of Qliphoth, a ritual meant to open the gates between this world and the underworld. Its sacrificial core is two captured Magic Knight captains, Yami Sukehiro and William Vangeance. The man who uncovered all of this is Nacht Faust, Vice Captain of Black Bulls, a former nobleman of House Faust, and a devil host himself (his devil is Gimodelo). He spent years undercover in the Spade Kingdom, so most of the Black Bull members had no idea they had a vice captain who was a spy, on mission in the Spade kingdom the whole time. He’s sarcastic, blunt, claims to hate everybody, and he’s out of place among his loud squadmates, but he clearly cares about protecting the kingdom.
Nacht’s real debut is in Episode 168. You may have caught him earlier in the opening theme and in a brief cameo in a previous episode. The Dark Triad has just captured Yami and William, and the heroes have no plan. Nacht catches Asta sneaking out of the infirmary, pins him with a spell, and calmly talks him out of a suicidal rescue attempt. He weilds Shadow Magic ( He moves through shadows, pulls people into them, and pins targets down.) and hosts Multiple devils ( Asta and the Dark Triad each host one devil, but Nacht has contracts with several.) He introduces his devil, Gimodelo, and shows he knows how to use devil power, which makes Asta’s ears perk up. Asta wants to learn on the spot, but Nacht tells him to rest first.
The next day he interrupts the captains meeting by rising out of a shadow with Asta tucked under his arm. When the captains go on the attack, he summons four masked beasts to stop them. Julius Novachrono (the Wizard King) vouches for him, and Nacht tells the captains how over the next seven days, the Advent begins and seven gates to the seven levels of the underworld open. With Ten devils matched to the Tree of Qliphoth, and the lower-level ones are the strongest. He warns if the final devil, Lucifero, emerges, the world ends, but until that happens, Yami and Vangeance stay alive. Nacht’s plan is to make Asta the ultimate warrior, since Anti Magic holds that potential. Around him he’ll build an elite force to reclaim the captains, destroy the Tree of Qliphoth, and strike the Spade Kingdom first.
Yuno’s Royal Bombshell : The captains’ meeting also drops a big reveal: Yuno is a prince of the Spade Kingdom. Yuno Grinberryall is an orphan who was left in the care of a church in Hage after the downfall of House Grinberryall, the former royal family of the Spade Kingdom. He was evacuated when a rebellion broke out against the royal family. Yuno doesn’t dwell on it. He asks to join the rescue and defends Vangeance, who was captured while shielding the Golden Dawn from Zenon Zogratis. ‘To the Golden Dawn,Vangeance is the kindest and most reliable captain they’ve ever had’, says Yuno to the Captains. Nacht agrees to bring him along seeing his powers and connection to the kingdom.
Meanwhile, Noelle Silva and the others wake up in Elysia, a secluded elf village in the neutral area. Noelle, Mimosa, Secre, Leopold, Luck and Charmy have grown much stronger over six months training with the spirit guardians (who are the strongest mages in the Heart Kingdom, and can borrow the power of natural mana), but they were not strong enough to save Lolopechka, the Heart kingdom queen. So they ask the elves for help, and Patolli says the elves’ Ultimate Magic could make them stronger.
The Devil-Binding Ritual
Nacht takes Asta to a secret chamber for two days of training centered on the Devil-Binding Ritual, a forbidden rite that makes a devil’s power your own. It starts with Nacht pulling the Anti Magic Devil out of Asta, and Asta’s right arm vanishes. The task is simple and terrifying: fight the devil and win, or become a grotesque monster like the owners of the skulls lining the chamber. Asta doesn’t want to fight, but he reads the devil’s ki and senses something surprising. This devil isn’t trying to kill him. That leads into the Last Episode, ” The Faraway Future,” which reveals Liebe’s backstory and introduces Licita (Richita), Asta’s mother, a compassionate, straightforward woman who never hesitates to help a child in need, even a devil. Her Magic ability lets her body passively absorbs the magic power and lifeforce of those near her, so she lives on the outskirts of a village. After giving birth to Asta, she feared she would drain his lifeforce too, and with deep regret she left him in a basket on the doorstep of Hage’s church.
Liebe’s Relation to Asta : Beyond the Devil-Binding Ritual
One day she finds Licht’s five-leaf clover grimoire, and soon after, a young devil lying injured in the woods. That devil was born without magic, which put him at the very bottom of the underworld’s pecking order. He was bullied and terrorized until a higher-ranked devil threw him at the gate of the underworld. Because he had no magic, he passed straight through the gate and landed in the human world, where people feared him and Magic Knights attacked him but Licita (Richita) saw only an injured kid. She took him home, adopted him, and named him Liebe. Liebe was immune to her draining body and her love and kindness changed how he saw himself and the world but that happiness ended when Lucifero tried to take over Liebe’s body. Refusing to let another child go, Licita (Richita) absorbed Lucifero’s magic power, but he seized Liebe’s left arm and drove it through her chest. She still forced him out, and as she died she sealed Liebe inside the five-leaf clover grimoire to keep him safe. As his body faded, Liebe called her “mom.”
Inside the grimoire, Liebe’s hatred toward the devils eventually manifested as Anti-Magic, and in the present he vows to kill them all, even if it means taking over Asta’s body. Yet Asta wins the fight, using techniques he learned from Kiato, Yami, Licht, Fanzell and Mars. Nacht advises him to fully subjugate the devil and grow stronger, but Asta asks Liebe to be his friend instead, pointing out that Liebe held back during the fight and isn’t the type to kill people. Gimodelo calls Asta a moron, and Nacht later calls the contract unprecedented and foolish, though he admits it was the right decision. Liebe wonders if it was fate that Asta turned out to be Licita’s (Richita’s) son, and shares the name she gave him. As they shake hands, matching markings appear on their left wrists and Asta’s right arm returns. Their training has begun to brong their Captains home and to save the world.
