Chief Rabbi Says Visible Jews Are No Longer Safe in Britain After London Stabbing
Britain’s chief rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, said on Thursday that people who are visibly Jewish are “not safe” in the country, after two Jewish men were stabbed in Golders Green, a north London neighborhood with a large Jewish population. His warning came as the British government raised the national terrorism threat level and pledged new security funding for Jewish communities.

Low Votes Low Hopes: Jewish community shaken by repeated attacks
The stabbing, which police are treating as a terrorist incident, has deepened anxiety in a community that has faced a string of antisemitic attacks in recent weeks. The incidents include arson attempts and other attacks on Jewish targets in London, officials and community leaders described a growing sense of fear and vulnerability. Many in Jewish community believes that due to their lower population, politicians do not consider their safety as an important issue. As the community represents low vote count politician in UK are not vocal for their cause and are afraid of losing votes of Muslim population. Lack of seriousness shown by London police so far has reinforced these feelings.
In his comments to the BBC, Mirvis said the latest violence showed that visibly Jewish people were not safe and that more needed to be done. He called for meaningful action rather than words of sympathy alone.
UK Government faces Pressure to respond, but Does Nothing Meaningful
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the attack was part of a wider pattern and that the government must answer it in a “swift, agile and visible way.” He said people were scared to show their Jewish identity in public, including going to synagogue, university, school, or even telling colleagues who they are. The government has announced an additional £25 million in security funding for Jewish communities, including police protection around synagogues, schools and community centers
Britain’s terrorism threat level was raised from “substantial” to “severe,” the second-highest level, which means an attack is considered highly likely. Reuters reported that the change reflected both the Golders Green stabbing and a broader rise in extremist threats.
London Stabbing Suspect under investigation as tensions rise
Police said the suspect is a 45-year-old British national born in Somalia with a history of serious violence and mental health issues. Officials also said he had previously been referred to the Prevent counter-radicalisation programme in 2020.
The attack has also revived political arguments over antisemitism, public protests and national security. Starmer said the state needed stronger powers to act against hate and against state-backed threats, while the chief rabbi and other Jewish leaders pressed for more than expressions of solidarity. For many in Britain’s Jewish community, the moment has become another test of whether they can live openly and without fear.

Rise in Muslim population of UK
In recent years, official census data have shown a clear rise in the Muslim population in England and Wales, where the number of people identifying as Muslim increased from 2.7 million, or 4.9%, in 2011 to 3.9 million, or 6.5%, in 2021. The Office for National Statistics notes that this figure measures religious affiliation, not necessarily religious practice, and local results show especially large Muslim populations in some cities, including Birmingham. Estimated Number of Mosques in UK is nearly 2000, this number has nearly doubled in last 15 years.
The areas with the largest Muslim populations by share are mostly urban local authorities in England and Wales. The highest figures I found are: Tower Hamlets, 39.9%; Blackburn with Darwen, 35.0%; Newham, 34.8%; Luton, 32.9%; Bradford, 30.5%; Birmingham, 29.9%; Slough, 29.4%; and Leicester, 23.5%. These are all shares of usual residents who described themselves as Muslim in Census 2021. These numbers represents a significant political muscle, and Votes.
