Melania Trump Chairs UN Security Council Amid Iran Conflict

US First Lady Melania Trump took the president’s seat at the UN Security Council on Monday. She led the session on children in conflict, even as Washington joined Israel in striking Iran. According to the United Nations, she became the first spouse of a world leader to preside over the council. Melanin became a part of the body that is responsible for maintaining international peace and security.

The image shows Melania Trump beside a United Nations Security Council meeting chamber as she chairs a session on children in conflict during escalating US-Iran tensions.

The meeting, which was titled “Children, Technology, and Education in Conflict”, had been scheduled before hostilities began over the weekend. However, it unfolded against a backdrop of escalating violence between Iran, Israel, and the United States. As the council’s rotating president for March, the United States selected the theme and participants.

Mrs. Trump was arrived at UN headquarters in a motorcade and then greeted by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Later, she shook hands with representatives of the council’s 15 member states before posing for a group photograph. Her office said that she would “emphasize education’s role in advancing tolerance and world peace”.

Nevertheless, her appearance drew sharp criticism from Tehran. Shortly before the session, Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, called it ‘deeply shameful and hypocritical’. He said it was wrong for Washington to convene a meeting on protecting children while it was launching airstrikes on Iranian cities. “For the United States, protecting children and maintaining international peace and security clearly mean something very different from what the UN Charter provides”, he told the reporters.

Iranian state media reported that an airstrike hit a girls’ school in southern Iran on Saturday. It killed at least 165 people and wounded dozens. The Israeli military said that it was not aware of strikes in that area, while the US military said that it was reviewing the reports.

Tensions Dominate Council Debate

Saturday’s emergency council meeting exposed deep divisions. Secretary-General Guterres had condemned US and Israeli strikes as violations of international law, which also includes the UN Charter. At the same time, he criticized Iran’s retaliatory attacks for breaching the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states in the Middle East. Against that backdrop, observers have closely watched whether Mrs. Trump would address the reported impact of the conflict on children.

Broader Strains in US-UN Relations

Her appearance also comes during strained ties between the US and the United Nations. Trump has withdrawn the US from several UN bodies, including the WHO and UNESCO. Additionally, the US owes billions in unpaid dues.

In January, Guterres warned that the organization would face “imminent financial collapse” unless member states met their obligations. UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said that Mrs. Trump’s participation underscores “the importance that the United States attaches to the Security Council and the subject”.
