Trump to Visit China in April, set to meet Xi Jinping

25th Nov. 2025

On 24th November 2025, President Donald Trump has confirmed that he will visit Beijing next year in April 2026 after a call with President Xi Jinping. This announcement marks a significant step toward renewing a diplomatic engagement between China and the US. To set sights for the big picture, Trump also extended an invitation for Xi Jinping to make a state visit to the United States later next year.

The Image shows President Donald and Xi Jinping shaking hands with a soft smile on their face.

Although the two leaders met in Busan just a month ago, their recent call showed that progress was continuing. As per the President and the Chinese Foreign Ministry, they discussed on issues like trade, the Russia-Ukraine War, Fentanyl, Soybeans, etc. Trump later posted on Truth Social, “Our relationship with China is extremely strong, and we have done a good, and very important, deal for our Great Farmers, and it will only get better”.

On the other hand, China’s state news agency also issued a statement after President Trump. They urged both countries to “keep up the momentum” and “move forward in the right direction” based on respect and mutual benefit. Beijing said that the relationship between the two countries had been on a “steady and positive trajectory” since their meeting in Busan in October, where they agreed to a short-term tariff truce.

Discussion on Trade Takes Centre Stage between Trump and Xi

In an effort to ease tension, the US recently decided to cut a 20% tariff in half to reduce the flow of fentanyl. However, tariffs on Chinese goods still remain and continue to average just below 50%. US also pulled back its threat to impose an additional 100% tariffs, while China postponed the implementation of its new export controls on rare earths.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, Trade was the primary focus of Monday’s discussion. Both sides were “pleased” with progress and intended to preserve stability. Beyond trade, however, the leaders addressed global security concerns. Xi reiterated that Taiwan’s “return to China” remains central to Beijing’s vision for the post-war international order.

The issue has heightened regional tensions, particularly because Japan is a close US ally. Earlier this month, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi warned that any Chinese attack on Taiwan might trigger a military response. Trump, however, did not mention Taiwan in his recent post. Even so, the call suggested that both countries aim to manage long-standing disputes while widening channels for discussion as 2026 approaches.
