92% Record Voter Turnout Marks Historic Election Day in Indian State of West Bengal
West Bengal recorded a provisional voter turnout of 91.78% in the first phase of its Assembly election on Thursday, according to the Election Commission of India. The commission said this was the highest-ever poll participation in the state since Independence. It also said the figure did not include service voters or postal ballots, and that the final numbers would be shared later through index cards.

The commission said the previous highest turnout in West Bengal was 84.72% in the 2011 Assembly election. In the latest round, turnout stood at 90.92% among men, 92.69% among women, and 56.79% among third-gender voters.
Polling was held across 152 Assembly constituencies in 16 districts, with voting beginning at 7 a.m. The Election Commission said 1,478 candidates were contesting in the phase, and that it monitored the process through live webcasting at polling stations.

In its press note, the commission also pointed to a set of voter-friendly steps used in the election. These included clearer candidate photographs on EVM ballot papers, a mobile deposit facility, redesigned voter information slips, and a cap of 1,200 electors per polling station.
The scale of participation gave the day a historic edge, even as the official tally remained provisional. The Election Commission said updated figures would follow once the remaining polling-station data was uploaded.

Significance of Ultra High Voter Turnout: What It Indicates
Traditionally Indian state of West Bengal leads in the voting percentage category. It is generally assumed that muslim citizens cast votes in larger fraction of their population, in comparison to the Hindu citizens. However, near 92% voter turnout may indicate that higher fraction of Hindu population has also voted this time in the 2026 assembly elections. The Election outcome may reflect the choice of the Hindu voters responsible for this record surge.
