Russia Withdraws UK Ambassador as Britain’s Ukraine Support Deepens Rift

Russia’s ambassador to the UK, Andrey Kelin, has left his post as tensions between Moscow and London have grown over Britain’s support for Ukraine. Andrey Kelin left his post on July 21 after more than seven years in London, and Moscow has not yet named a successor. The Russian embassy has described bilateral relations as being at an “unprecedentedly low level” and has accused Britain of following a “path of confrontation”. Britain’s Military Aid to Ukraine has Fueled Moscow’s Concerns

Britain has provided Ukraine with military, financial and humanitarian assistance since Russia launched its full-scale invasion. By July 2026, the UK had committed £25 billion in total aid, including £16 billion in military support and £5.6 billion in non-military assistance. Its military support has included weapons, ammunition and Storm Shadow missiles. In June, Britain also announced a £752 million package for 150,000 drones. It has supplied air-defense support, including 1,000 additional UK-made missiles in a package worth more than £500 million, and has trained Ukrainian troops to use military equipment effectively.

Britain has also provided financial and humanitarian assistance. Its support has included a £2.26 billion contribution to the ERA loan programme, while London announced a €300 million investment to help Ukraine obtain Swedish Gripen fighter jets. In addition, the UK has imposed sanctions on Russia and related individuals and organisations to increase pressure on Moscow. Russia has criticised Britain’s expanding support for Kyiv and recently warned of “consequences” over reports that Ukrainian forces had used British-made drones. The dispute has further strained Russia-UK relations as Britain continues to back Ukraine’s defense.

While Andy Burnham’s Kyiv Visit has Deepened UK-Ukraine Defense Cooperation

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has arrived in Kyiv for his first official visit to Ukraine. The country’s foreign minister welcomed him as he began talks focused on continued support for Kyiv. During the visit, Burnham will chair a meeting of the “coalition of the willing” and is expected to hand Ukraine technical blueprints to help it develop its own long-range missiles. The trip comes on Ukraine’s Independence Day and follows Moscow’s warning over the reported use of British-made drones. Ukraine has also stepped up long-range attacks on Moscow and other Russian regions, targeting oil refineries and warehouses.

While travelling to Kyiv, Burnham met European Council President Antonio Costa and said Britain needed to be “bolder” in strengthening its ties with Europe. He also backed closer defense and security cooperation with European allies. The visit therefore comes as Britain continues its support for Ukraine while seeking deeper defense links across Europe. At the same time, the move adds to tensions with Moscow, which has criticised Western military support for Kyiv and warned Britain that its involvement could bring further consequences.
