Trump Announces 70 Million Children Now Enrolled in Trump Accounts
President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that nearly 70 million children now have Trump Accounts. The milestone follows the Treasury Department’s automatic enrollment of more than 60 million eligible children. About 10 million accounts had already been created after the program launched in July. Trump called the expansion a “historic” step toward giving American children an investment account.

The accounts are tax-advantaged investment accounts available to eligible children under 18. The only requirement is that children must have a valid Social Security number to qualify for automatic enrollment. However, automatic enrollment does not mean parents can immediately manage the accounts. A parent or guardian must claim the account before managing it or adding certain contributions.
Trump Accounts Reach 70 Million Children After Automatic Enrollment
The Treasury Department completed the automatic enrollment process on October 1. This move created accounts for more than 60 million additional eligible children. It was followed by the voluntary creation of millions of accounts after the July launch. The White House said the total number of accounts has now reached nearly 70 million. However, the nearly 70 million figure refers to accounts created, not accounts actively claimed. The accounts were created under the Working Families Tax Cuts legislation enacted in 2025.
Parents and guardians still need to claim an automatically created account to manage it. The Treasury says the process requires identity and parent-child relationship verification. Claiming the account also allows families to make contributions and access eligible benefits. They are structured as traditional individual retirement accounts with special rules for children. During the growth period, withdrawals generally are restricted until the child reaches adulthood. The program therefore combines long-term investing with a tax-advantaged savings structure for children.
Trump Accounts offer a $1,000 Federal Seed Contribution for Eligible Children
The Trump Accounts program includes a one-time $1,000 federal contribution for eligible children. This pilot contribution applies to qualifying U.S. citizens born from 2025 through 2028. A child must also have a Social Security number to qualify for the payment. The $1,000 contribution does not count against the regular annual contribution limit. In addition, eligible children must have their accounts claimed to receive the federal seed contribution. Other contributions can come from families, employers, governments and qualifying organizations.
For 2026 and 2027, most other contributions are generally capped at $5,000 annually. Employers can contribute up to $2,500, subject to the overall annual contribution rules. The accounts generally invest in funds tracking indexes made up primarily of U.S. companies. Trump’s announcement marks a major expansion of the program only months after its launch. Parents therefore still have an important step before they can manage their child’s account. The Treasury has directed families to use the official Trump Accounts system for that process.
