Zelensky Warns Ukraine Talks Can’t Wait for Iran War to End

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged that peace negotiations over his country’s war with Russia must not be delayed until a U.S. involvement in conflict with Iran ends. In a recent interview, he stressed this urgency, noting that Ukraine faces ongoing tragedy. He called for parallel efforts to address both crises

Zelensky’s comments came as CNN’s April 22 transcript listed an interview with him on Amanpour and other programs that framed the Iran conflict as part of the broader international news agenda. Ukrainian outlet Ukrinform reported that Zelensky said he did not “see the opportunity” to meet until “the case of Iran will be closed,” and that Ukraine should not be treated as something that can be handled “a little bit later.”

Shifting Focus away from Ukraine Poses Risk

The war in Iran has drawn significant attention from the United States, sidelining discussions on Ukraine. Zelensky acknowledged this shift but warned of its dangers. He said efforts to halt fighting in Ukraine risk stalling until the Iranian conflict resolves.

Zelensky also warned that a prolonged conflict in Iran could make it harder for Ukraine to secure U.S.-made missile defenses. He said that Ukraine has not yet seen disruptions in weapons or intelligence supplies, but that U.S. production of anti-missile systems is limited, and this could become a problem if demand rises elsewhere. He said that if the war in Iran continues, or if a ceasefire is delayed, the risk to Ukraine’s access to anti-ballistic systems could grow.

Ukraine Should be Handled Parallelly

Ukraine cannot be treated as “a little bit later,” Zelensky insisted. The country endures a major tragedy, he added, and leaders must manage both wars concurrently. This comes as fighting persists and Russia deploys over 57,000 Iranian-designed drones against Ukraine.

He understands the U.S. preoccupation with Iran. However, he emphasized that Ukraine needs attention now. Zelensky also highlighted recent European Union support, including a €90 billion loan vital for weapon production. Zelensky also pointed to the strain of having the same U.S. team involved in both Iran-related diplomacy and the talks around Russia’s war against Ukraine. That overlap, he suggested, makes it harder for Kyiv to keep its issues at the center of the conversation.

Broader Concerns Expressed by Zelensky

A prolonged Iran war benefits Russia, Zelensky has said previously. It diverts U.S. resources and eases pressure on Moscow. Ukraine worries that post-Iran, the Trump administration might push for territorial concessions to end the conflict. Zelensky expressed no firm dates for U.S. visits to Kyiv. Promised trips by Witkoff and Kushner have not happened as expected. Despite this, technical talks continue amid the challenges. Zelensky’s interview overtly emphasized that Ukraine does not have the luxury of waiting for another war to end before its own needs return to the top of the global agenda.
