Eric Dane Dies at 53 After ALS Battle
Actor Eric Dane, who was widely recognized for his role in the long-running ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, has died at the age of 53. He was battling with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The American television star revealed in April 2025 that he had been living with the incurable neurological disorder, which progressively impairs muscle control and voluntary movement.

In an emotional interview with Diane Sawyer in June 2025, Dane described the severity of his condition. He said, “My left side is functioning; my right side has completely stopped working.” He further added that, “I feel like maybe a couple, a few more months and I won’t have my left hand either”. Nevertheless, despite the diagnosis, he expressed optimism at the time and stated that, “I don’t think this is the end of my story”.
Eric Dane’s Rise to Fame through Television Drama
Born on November 9, 1972, in San Francisco, Dane began acting during his high school years and made his television debut in a 1991 episode of Saved by the Bell. Soon after, he appeared in several popular shows, which include The Wonder Years, Roseanne, and Married… with Children.
However, his profile rose significantly when he joined the supernatural drama Charmed as Jason Dean for two seasons. His breakthrough came in 2006, when he was cast as Dr. Mark Sloan in Grey’s Anatomy. The character was affectionately known as “McSteamy”, which has quickly become a fan favorite and helped Dane to establish him as a prime-time television star. Following his departure from the show in 2012, he went on to headline the TNT action drama The Last Ship. In the show, he was portrayed as a Cmdr. Tom Chandler throughout its five-season run.
A Look at Eric Dane’s Later Career and Personal Life
In subsequent years, Dane appeared in the HBO series Euphoria, where he played Cal Jacobs. More recently, he featured in the 2025 Amazon Prime crime drama Countdown. Alongside his television work, Dane built a film career with roles in X-Men: The Last Stand, Marley & Me, Burlesque, Dangerous Waters, and Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
Dane is survived by his two daughters, whom he shared with actress Rebecca Gayheart. The couple married in 2004. Although Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018, she later withdrew the petition in March 2025. In a December 2025 essay, she described their bond as a “familial love” and added that she would continue to support him throughout his illness.
