Hero Pilot and Passengers Help Save Flydubai Flight Bound for Israel
Flydubai Flight FZ1073 was flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday with 174 people on board when the co-pilot stabbed Captain Smit Machchhar and apparently tried to crash the aircraft, according to Israeli officials. However, the injured Indian captain managed to open the cockpit door despite his wounds. Passengers and crew then rushed into the cockpit and helped overpower the attacker. The incident remains under investigation, and the motive has not yet been established.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have praised Captain Machchhar for his courage during the cockpit attack. Modi said the captain’s bravery had helped save lives, while Netanyahu praised his actions in opening the cockpit door and allowing passengers and crew to confront the attacker. In addition, both leaders have wished Machchhar a speedy recovery as the investigation into the Flydubai flight incident continues.
Captain Smit Machchhar Opened the Cockpit Door Despite His Injuries
Captain Smit Machchhar had been stabbed and was lying injured in the cockpit. However, despite his wounds, he used his remaining strength to open the cockpit door. Passengers, including plumber Yaniv Hayoun, quickly rushed to help. Hayoun restrained the attacker and briefly took control of the aircraft before other crew members stepped in. Two additional Flydubai pilots also helped regain control of the Boeing 737 Max 8 and guided it to a safe landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.
Machchhar, who is from Mumbai, suffered serious injuries and significant blood loss and remains under medical care in Tabuk. Dentist Shota Musayev also entered the cockpit, helped restrain the attacker and treated the wounded captain. He said those who responded knew they had only seconds to act. In addition, the Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia said Machchhar’s condition was stable. The quick response from the passengers, crew and other pilots helped end the Flydubai cockpit attack without loss of life.
Other Pilots Regained Control After Flydubai Jet Plunged 14,000 Feet
Flight-tracking data showed that the Flydubai Boeing 737 Max 8 lost more than 14,000 feet in about 30 seconds during the cockpit struggle, dropping from around 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet. The aircraft then changed direction near the Jordanian border and continued toward Tabuk, where the crew issued a distress call before landing safely. Israel had scrambled military aircraft after initially fearing a hijacking. However, later reports focused on the cockpit attack. Saudi authorities arrested the co-pilot, according to Israeli officials, while Flydubai has suspended flights to and from Israel as the motive remains under investigation.
The steep descent has raised questions among aviation experts. One passenger described it as intense turbulence lasting about 20 to 30 seconds. Former United Airlines pilot Steve Arroyo said the aircraft faced powerful aerodynamic forces but remained intact. Another expert said the jet had enough altitude to recover, although recovery below 10,000 feet could have become much harder. In addition, Mainland Air chief executive Philip Kean praised Captain Smit Machchhar’s leadership. The investigation will examine the cockpit attack, emergency response and security procedures surrounding the flight.
