Plague Scare in Russia: Siberian Lab Worker’s Death Raises Alarm

A suspected plague scare has gripped Russia’s Irkutsk region after a young laboratory worker died in hospital, leaving many residents anxious about a possible outbreak. Rumors of pneumonic plague spread quickly through local media, but Russian officials have not confirmed that diagnosis and described the cause of her pneumonia as unknown. Rospotrebnadzor, the health watchdog, says that the situation is stable, yet nearly 200 people who had contact with the woman are under medical observation.

Russian researchers investigate suspected plague samples inside a high-security Siberian infectious-disease laboratory amid a potential plague outbreak investigation.

Local media identified the victim as Darya Shipilova, a 28-year-old technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute of Siberia and the Far East. She died in the early hours of October 2 at a hospital in Shelekhov, a town near the regional capital, after her condition worsened. However, the head of neighboring Buryatia first tied her death to plague, then softened his wording and said she had not visited the republic. In addition, he said Buryatia has no plague outbreaks, yet unclear official messaging has fueled panic on social media across the region.

A Reported Broken Test Tube and Few Official Answers

Lyudi Baikala reported that Shipilova broke a test tube holding plague bacteria on September 25, though officials have not publicly confirmed that account. The germ behind plague, Yersinia pestis, normally circulates among wild rodents and fleas, and the pneumonic form can spread between people through respiratory droplets (via coughing, sneezing, etc). Rospotrebnadzor says no accidents involving pathogens were recorded at the institute, and extra tests on her bio samples found no organisms tied to her work.

Her condition then deteriorated quickly, and she was hospitalized on September 29 as doctors first suspected severe Covid. But her rapid decline prompted tests for highly dangerous infections and she was placed on a ventilator, yet doctors were unable to save her. Meanwhile, police has reportedly opened a criminal investigation into possible health and safety violations resulting in her death. Former colleagues of Shipilova stated that the institute applies strict biosafety rules, including plague vaccinations for interns. Officials had initially avoided the word plague, referring instead to a highly dangerous infection.

Quarantines, Masks and a Global Watch

Authorities moved quickly, with Rospotrebnadzor chief Anna Popova flying to the region for an emergency meeting with Governor Igor Kobzev to coordinate containment measures. The hospital where she died was quarantined, planned public events in Irkutsk were cancelled, and an aluminum plant in Shelekhov introduced a mask mandate on October 3, for its workers amid the investigation. Kobzev says all known contacts are under observation, with no symptoms and negative laboratory tests so far, and he has urged residents to remain calm. The case has also drawn attention from the World Health Organization and an offer of help from the United States.

The World Health Organization says the risk to the general public appears low, based on unofficial information it has received about the case. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio played down the danger on Monday, but stated that Washington is watching the case closely. President Donald Trump has offered American help if Russia needs it, adding that he had not yet spoken to Vladimir Putin about the matter. The State Department has also urged Russia to share accurate information quickly and openly, adding that many details of the case remain unconfirmed. Untreated pneumonic plague can kill within one to six days, which is why early detection and prompt antibiotic treatment matters in any suspected case.
