US and Iran Strike Back and Forth Amid Israeli Assault in Lebanon
The United States and Iran traded fresh strikes near the Strait of Hormuz, deepening an already fragile crisis in the Gulf. US forces shot down four Iranian attack drones that officials said threatened shipping in the waterway. In addition, they struck a ground control station near Bandar Abbas that was preparing to launch another drone. Iran then appeared to respond by targeting an American airbase in Kuwait, while Kuwait’s army said its air defences were intercepting hostile missile and drone threats. The exchange added new pressure to the ceasefire and raised fresh concerns over the security of a key global shipping route.

The tension also cast a shadow over already strained Iran talks, with Donald Trump accusing Tehran of stalling a peace deal and trying to wait out his administration. He warned that the US could “finish the job” if Iran did not agree to a deal. However, the latest violence did not stop the wider regional conflict from widening further. Israel intensified strikes in southern Lebanon and declared a large area a new combat zone. The fresh fighting, along with rising oil prices and threats around the Strait of Hormuz, has made diplomacy even harder and pushed the Middle East closer to a wider crisis.
Israel Expands Southern Lebanon Offensive Amid Regional Crisis
Israel expanded its military offensive in southern Lebanon this week as fighting with Hezbollah intensified across several areas near the border. Israeli strikes hit Sidon, Tyre, and Adloun, while ground troops moved deeper into southern Lebanon during clashes with Hezbollah fighters. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the operation aims to strengthen Israel’s border security and reduce Hezbollah’s military presence in the region. In addition, Israel’s military reported that a Hezbollah drone attack killed one Israeli soldier, adding to the growing violence along the frontier.
However, the conflict is also increasing pressure across the wider Middle East. Hezbollah fighters described “point-blank range” combat with Israeli troops near strategic towns beyond Israel’s declared “yellow line” in southern Lebanon. Lebanon’s health ministry said more than 3,200 people have died in Israeli strikes since early March, while over 1.2 million residents have fled their homes. At the same time, tensions around the Strait of Hormuz continue to disrupt global shipping routes and energy markets. The worsening crisis has also made ceasefire talks involving Iran, Lebanon, and the United States far more difficult.
